He might have been the owner's son himself (who knows and who cares?), but in my opinion, in a decent place, for this incredible rudeness he would have been jobless right from the next minute. When the sun went down, the waiter/janitor/whatever else started to arrange and clean the sunbeds and suggested me - and, as I overheard, to a few other people near me - to get up and go home to take a nice shower and go to bed. This myth was driven home during a Tactical Response Fighting Shotgun class where we fired a single round of buckshot at a piece of paper 21 feet away. I’ll even venture he or she has never fired any of the buckshot available on the market for a modern combat shotgun. This statement comes from someone who has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. 1: “You don’t have to aim just point the thing down the hallway.” With that, here are three myths surrounding the use of a shotgun for personal defense. So, to be really clear, the shotgun is not a talisman that will scare away an intruder, nor will the spread of the projectiles fired from it insure you can’t miss. And they’ll tell you loading a shotgun is what makes or breaks you. Experienced shooters in multi-gun competitions around the country will testify to this. With the exception of NFA items, they are usually bulky, heavy, slow to reload and carrying a laughable amount of ammo. Moreover, the amount of cool-guy accessories you attach to a shotgun has wrongly placed the venerable self-defense gun on a big white pedestal.Ī shotgun is one of the most versatile but hard-to-master firearms available. What I am saying is shotguns are plagued by a few myths. Now I’m not saying a shotgun is not a great home-defense weapon in fact, it has been proven time and time again to be a great choice for home defense. … and ask the so-called “expert” behind the counter, “What is the best type of gun for home defense?” Without missing a beat, the answer is usually some variation of this: “Buy yourself X brand of shotgun you can’t miss.” At this point, I usually walk out because I can’t stand hearing sewage like this spewed at uneducated buyers. Spend ten minutes in a gun store and someone will walk in. conductor- Marin Alsop)\Philip Glass -07- Symphony No. 4, 'Heroes', The Light (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra feat. It's an intriguing listen throughout.TITLE "Symphony No. Surprisingly, Glass' arrangements and orchestrations emphasize the icy allure of the original compositions, and the shimmering, glassy textures sound coldly beautiful. Like Low before it, Heroes was one of David Bowie's most experimental and avant-garde records, so it made sense that Philip Glass would follow the Low Symphony with the "Heroes" Symphony, adapting Bowie and Brian Eno's original, minimalistic synthesized sketches for full orchestra. The album includes the "Heroes" Symphony performed by American Composers Orchestra directed by Michael Riesman and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. The symphony is scored for 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 3 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, piano, celesta and strings. Glass also based his earlier Low Symphony on the David Bowie album, Low. 4 "Heroes") composed by American composer Philip Glass in 1996 based on the album "Heroes" by David Bowie. Heroes Symphony is a symphony (also known as Symphony No. I have to wonder why there's no change in the tray icon to indicate new messages, or some form of reminder, or even a sound. I have no problem editing a config file, but this seems like extremely lazy dev work (something that would have literally taken 30 seconds since they did bother to make a GUI checkbox for minimizetotray) and it makes me wonder about the actual security of the protocol/application if something so trivial was omitted. Setting "minimizeonclose = true" and then starting the application does in fact have the desired effect. I find it strange that these lines are in the keys.dat, but don't appear to have any corresponding relation to any settings in the Windows GUI (given that there would logically need to be some passcode created through the GUI to actually crypt the files): keysencrypted = falseĪs well as, since I'm looking through it, I noticed the GUI has an option to Minimize To Tray, but not Close To Tray, however there is a line in keys.dat for both: minimizetotray = True If someone (an attacker or law enforcement) wanted to, they could just yank the hard drive (BIOS and DriveLock passwords be damned) and copy the appdata folder and read all sent/received messages with the BitMessage client, or grab their private keys out of keys.dat. Although I have full disk encryption, I'm thinking about recipients who don't. I am hesitant to add the file to the exclusions list, as it would appear that my sent/received messages are also in there somewhere (I don't see a separate place for them, which would be ideal).Īnother concern I have is that there's no local encryption for the keys.dat or messages.dat. This is unacceptable to me (since it appears that the file is constantly changing as the client processes messages on the network) because it's an extra 1GB on top of every one of my nightly incremental system backups. My "AppData\Roaming\PyBitmessage\messages.dat" is sitting at an unwieldy 1.03GB (and I only personally have 1 message in my inbox and 2 sent messages). u/blue_cube, reported one month ago that his appdata was only taking up 150MB. There are a million ambient lighting configurations, too, and they'll even put on an animated light show, if that's your thing - something I find rather distracting while driving at night. Plus, without Hyperscreen, you can better see the lovely open-pore wood, giving the AMG EQE a really beautiful appearance. My test car does without Mercedes' dashboard-spanning Hyperscreen infotainment system, but I can't say I miss it: the 12.8-inch central display offers more than enough digital real estate, especially combined with the standard 12.3-inch gauge cluster. Inside, the AMG changes are even less obvious, limited to things like badges and steering wheel flair. I love strong regenerative braking, but the pedal-moving 'feature' is so dumb that it makes me leave the EQE's regen turned off all the time. This means your foot never reaches the pedal at the same place every time, so braking feel is inconsistent. If you dial in some regen, which you can do via the paddles on the steering wheel, the brake pedal itself moves to vaguely mimic the amount of stopping force being applied electronically. It's the way Mercedes' regenerative braking system works, which is to say, horribly. My major gripe with this car isn't unique to the AMG, or even the EQE. The steering lacks a bit of road feel, but I'll grant this sedan that one demerit considering it absolutely goes like hell. The AMG EQE doesn't shimmy or shudder over broken pavement, nor is it floaty while cornering. At all times, the EQE feels more tuned for a plush ride than outright performance, making it a car you'd be happy to drive every day. I believe this is an unfortunate side effect of the new patch and hope it can be looked into. The AMG EQE has adaptive air springs with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings, but the differences between these modes aren't as noticeable as, say, the power delivery. I’ve disabled the mouse buttons functions and re-enabled them. I’ve unplugged the mouse and plugged it into 4 different USB ports Also of note, it happens on both the Glorious model D gaming mouse and my razer death adder. It only occurs when I am pressing my strafe button first. Interesting notes, If I am holding any other mouse button prior to hitting a strafe button, it does not lock my character into a strafe. When I am strafing left OR right AND then click any other mouse button (left, right, middle, button 4/5) my character gets stuck in an auto strafe (left or right depending on which one I was going) and I can only stop the strafe by clicking whichever button direction I am strafing.Įxample: I hold Mouse button 4 and start strafing left, I then left click my mouse, my character will now be stuck auto strafing left UNTIL I click mouse button 4 again to stop the strafe. This has never been an issue ever before on either of the mouse’s I use to play. I use the two buttons where my thumb rests (mouse button 4/5) for strafe left and strafe right. I use middle mouse (clicking in the scroll wheel) to toggle auto run. I use double mouse click for all movement (no other keybinds). To start I currently use a glorious Model D wired gaming mouse and previously used Razer Death Adder. This is a somewhat complex issue that only started occurring after the patch on. Undoubtedly, playing with a friend and taking turns completing levels enhanced my enjoyment.ĭoomguy, now’s not the time for knock knock jokes! It was a fast-paced shooter and the stages and enemy encounters never felt duplicated, despite a limited palette of either. On paper, this all sounds monotonous, but the gameplay was quite fun. That took place across fifteen-odd levels, with one or two focusing on a boss fight rather than exploration. Honestly, I wasn’t particularly jazzed about playing the 32X version but it’s hard to ignore how well-made it is, even this version.įor hours, we blasted demons with a handful of weapons and searched for keycards in order to open locked doors and progress to each level’s exit. After all, this was the most significant of the early first-person shooters and became one of the most popular, if not played, video games up to that point in time. I couldn’t tell you what went through my head then, but I don’t remember being blown away, even considering the context of its release. My first gameplay exposure came with the Xbox Live Arcade release. His experience with Doom supersedes mine, having played it on PC closer to its cultural explosion. One knock against the 32X version is the limited real estate devoted to the game screen. Our session lasted a couple of hours, and we wound up making it to the final stage*. That game’s primitive polygonal graphics can be off-putting at first, but I was surprised at how fast and responsive the game was it’s definitely a worthwhile title. As he’s not partial to racing games we barely touched VRD. The two that we spent the most time with were Virtua Racing Deluxe and Doom. With such a limited library there aren’t a lot of options, especially when I only have a few games. Our session was a memorable one though, so it was worth it. There are three power bricks (although only two are needed if the Sega CD isn’t being utilized), an A/V cable connecting the Genesis and 32X, and an A/V cable connecting the monstrosity to the TV. Along with it, I also have a Sega CD which makes setup an absolute chore. Its library rounds out at about forty titles which pales in comparison to the nine hundred plus that the Genesis hosted. It’s an add-on for the Sega Genesis that increased its power but never proved successful for a variety of reasons, namely poor timing. Who can say what sparked it, but one evening Jeff and I played the Sega 32X. I was oddly compelled to continue playing it, even when I felt like many of my deaths were cheap, so take that as you will. After seeing that I barely scraped the surface I am interested in playing more of it, but not because what I experienced was such a joy to play. This being the case, I would only take this review as my experiences with a minority of the game and not a comprehensive examination of it. You want the lowdown though? I only progressed to the third stage and the game has twelve! I had no idea it was that beefy until I did further research. This sounds like a lot of negativity towards Alien 3. Hostages were abound, but aliens were more prevalent. They’d quickly charge and if I didn’t immediately start shooting, I would take damage. Often, they’d materialize at the edge of the screen as I progressed. Locating the prisoners wasn’t so bad (I had to explore the stages anyways, right?) but constantly getting bum rushed by the aliens grew annoying. Most took a few attempts to learn where the aliens popped up and rushed me and where the prisoners were. The stages needed to be completed in a set amount of time and this was hard to do the first time through. Most stages tasked Ripley with rescuing the prisoners of Fiorina 161 and combating the aliens. The gameplay was related to the events of the movie too but skewed (and omitted) the storyline in favor of more action. It looks to have a few different environments to be fair, but I didn’t witness these firsthand. On the whole, I thought the movie was rather brown and monotonous visually, and the game didn’t shake this aura early on. This is to say, I didn’t begin playing the Genesis game with much optimism. Of the “five” movies, I’d put Alien 3 at the bottom of the list. It helped too! I can comprehend the mediocrity of Alien 3 on the Sega Genesis a little more knowing that the movie it’s based on is of the same quality. I’ve now watched all movies in the franchise and am ready to dive into the related games and feel confident in my understanding of the source material. It began in earnest after watching Prometheus, an “unofficial” movie in the series, although it’s about as official as anything else if you ask me. Truly my foray into the Alien franchise began with Alien Trilogy on the PlayStation, although I’ve barely touched that game. There are practical reasons for all this granular detail, so you’ll benefit from temperature controls during extreme weather while smashing a window to break into a car will make it less secure if zombies attack. You can lock them, break into them, hotwire them, fiddle with the thermostat, muck around with the radio, strip them for parts - everything’s taken into account. Take vehicles, for instance they’re a recent addition, and they pretty much function like real cars. Project Zomboid’s obsessively detailed simulation deserves top billing. Project Zomboid Developer: The Indie StoneĪ zombie survival game that seems reluctant to leave early access, Project Zomboid is an isometric sandbox that drops you in a town and tasks you with simply not dying, which is easier said than done when hundreds of zombies are waiting to make a snack out of your brain. The map is a starkly beautiful slice of Canadian wilderness, so who could be blamed for taking a break from scavenging to snap a few shots?Ģ7. There’s still occasionally time to play the part of tourist, however. Hikes are fraught with tension, as you keep an ear out for wolf howls and pray that the wind doesn’t pick up. Instead of filling journeys from A to B with enemies, competing players and more junk than you could possibly know what to do with, The Long Dark fills them with atmosphere. There are lots of fascinating interpretations of the survival genre in this list, but The Long Dark sticks to the fundamentals and works magic with them. You’ve got to work out your diet, how far you can travel on a full stomach, exactly how much time you’ll have before it gets dark and the temperature plummets, and then there are the contingency plans for things like blizzards - you’re not popping out for a quick drink. You have to worry about your basic human needs and very little else, but that’s actually a pretty big job. Getting ready to leave the shelter feels like planning a wilderness expedition. You’ve got to find shelter, and then venture out to find supplies, all while trying to keep your calorie intake up and your body warm. Its episodic story mode, Wintermute, serves as a gentle introduction to its harsh, yet beautiful world, but it's the game's survival mode that's the true, open-ended test of your mettle, dropping you into a freezing world and then leaving you to find your own way. The Long Dark’s vast, snow-blanketed wilderness is a harsh and uncompromising place. The last I checked David Tennant is in it? The game's also home to an absolute plethora of updates and expansions, which means you shouldn't be starved of things to do. Expect lots of collecting fibers and fur to craft boots, maybe a spear to fend off enemy players or protect your allies. And if you're a fan of the traditional first-person survival sim, then you'll find plenty to like here too. If you're a dino fan, then you'll well catered for here, as you're eventually able to use them as forms of transport or the equivalent of combine harvesters. Progression is Ark: Survival Evolved's greatest feat, as you slowly transform from a washed-up cave dweller into a dinosaur-taming legend. Ark: Survival Evolved Developer: Studio Wildcard, Instinct Games, Efecto Studios, Virtual Basement LLC Hayden reckons its use of permadeath makes it not only the story of survival but community too, with monotonous tasks often leading to encounters which can lead to the most memorable of encounters.Ģ9.
